poverty....a bitter reality working in a media institution like gma channel 7 gives me the opportunity to see life in different sides. we are assigned to research for different stories; about collections, hobbies, wonderful places, food, stories about people, their success and failure. we see people in their extreme happines and the opposite. one of the recent stories i did is about an eleven year old girl who committed suicide because of extreme poverty and hunger. marianet amper, a grade six student from davao, hung herself on their house's ceiling to end her life that according to the diary found right after her death, was full of misery. the government was hurled with criticism, most people blamed them for the lack of action in alleviating poverty that pains the filipino masses. doh sec. duque, in a press conference, admitted that they take full responsibility in this shocking event and that they'll do everything to investigate if there are other reasons that led mariannet to take her own life. a few days after, another child, wilbert yaranon, 14 yrs old from the town of dumanggas in iloilo also took his own life and hung himself. and all of the people who knew wilbert were pointing to one reason, that he too, just like mariannet, was tired of the misery of living scantily. as we dig dipper into this story, i was required to search for some photos, to serve as visual support for our story on poverty...i just wasted to share to you on what i came up with. this is the photo of a sudanese girl who tried with all her might to go to a united nations camp and probably beg for food. she hasn't eaten for days and in her weakness, she stopped for a few minutes of rest. behind her is a vulture waiting patiently till this little sudanese girl ran out of breath and die. till then, he will be having his meal. this photo won a pullitzer prize. kevin carter, the photojournalist who took the photo. after the photo was published in new york times, their office was stormed with calls of people inquiring about what happened to the little sudanese girl. the staff, not knowing what to tell them, were also hurled with criticisms because they did not do anything to help her. kevin carter, they accused, was another vulture looking at the girl, waiting for his taste of good publicity. after three months, he committed suicide beacuse of depression. famine and extreme hunger is not new to us, we have seen photos of people form most part of africa whose skin have stick to their bones. here are a few depressing photos of how life is like for our fellowmen in poverty stricken areas abroad a child, probably gone out of his senses because of extreme hunger. tries to eat what's behind the cow's anus. this boy takes a bath from this cows urine shagged on 11/13/2007 12:09:00 PM Comments: Post a Comment
